This weekend I was reminded of one of my favorite songs from Shawn Colvin. Her music and fall go hand-in-hand for me. I listened to her music during a very transformational fall for me so every fall I have to listen again.
I was driving to Portland to visit with my mom and I was reminded of Shawn’s song, “Climb On”. It’s always been on of my favorites and especially these lyrics:
Sometimes we don’t know what to do
We work so hard
Being tough on our own
But now it’s me and you…
..’Cause we all fall on hard times.
But you don’t have to stand up all alone
Just put your hand in mine
And climb on a back that’s strong
You can get what you want
Climb on a back that’s strong
~ Lyrics by Shawn Colvin
I think we do try and power through on our own so often and if we were more open to giving and receiving support, I wonder how things might change and what good it could do. I think so many people want to help but they are waiting to be asked. Those of us that need the help and support, need to know it’s okay to allow it in our lives. It doesn’t mean we’re any less strong or capable. It just means we get to take a break right now.
Where could you use a little support in your life today? Do you know someone who is excellent at the area where you need support? What would happen if you asked for support? How might it change your life? How might it change the person giving support?
Just breathe. Create an opening…
